Areola tattooing, sometimes called 3D nipple tattooing or areola micropigmentation, is a non-surgical procedure where the illusion of a 3-dimensional areola and nipple are created through a specialized tattoo. This quick and nearly painless procedure uses a variety of advanced micro-pigmented techniques to create a natural looking final result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Please carefully review and read through our frequently asked questions below.
There will be no refunds on the day of the appointment for reasons stated in our Cancellations and Rescheduling Policy.
Thank you so much for respecting our time, as we respect yours!
IS AREOLA TATTOOING SAFE?
Definitely. Areola tattooing is as safe as any other tattooing process. Choosing an artist who uses safe sterilization and hygiene practices keeps the risk of infection extremely low. Reactions to ink are very rare but can occur. The primary culprit is most commonly red ink. Since a nipple tattoo is done with colors that are similar to skin tone, there is little to no risk of a reaction.
DOES AREOLA TATTOOING HURT?
We do our best to make the areola tattooing process as painless as possible. Depending on your particular surgery, there may be some small amount of sensation, but it usually is minimal or mildly uncomfortable. In most cases, our clients do not feel any pain.
IS AREOLA TATTOOING A GOOD CHOICE FOR ME?
Breast, areola, and nipple tattoos are for anyone seeking to improve their overall breast appearance and 10x their confidence.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MRIs IF I GET AN AREOLA TATTOO?
Some people may have swelling or burning around the tattoo area when they have magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), although this happens rarely and does not last long. Let your health care professional know that you have a 3D nipple tattoo before they order an MRI for you.
HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT AFTER SURGERY TO HAVE AREOLA TATTOOING DONE?
We require you to heal for a minimum of 4 months from the date of your final surgery and/or nipple reconstruction before we start tattooing.
I HAD NIPPLE RECONSTRUCTION. CAN I STILL GET A NIPPLE TATTOO?
Yes, although there are occasions when the pigment does not take well on the reconstructed nipple. The reconstructed nipple and the area around it can still be tattooed, but follow-up visits may be needed to ensure adequate pigment retention in that area.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?
The entire appointment for both bilateral and unilateral breast tattoos typically takes up to 2 hours. This includes numbing, layout, and pigment color selection.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO A AREOLA TATTOO APPOINTMENT?
We recommend wearing a top that you can easily take on and off. To avoid transferring ink to your clothing, we will remove your top only, at which point we drape you with a paper vest. At the end of the service, the tattooed area is covered with a medical pad or clear bandage (unless you have a tape/adhesive allergy). Wearing a bra is optional but not required.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THE TATTOO AREA TO HEAL?
Healing times can vary. Typically, it takes 7-10 days. Slight scabbing or skin flaking will occur, but this is normal.
A thin coat of ointment may be applied as needed during the healing process. A small non-stick pad or bandage will be required for the first few days to avoid sticking to clothing. Washing the area once a day and applying the ointment is normally all that is required to get a beautiful, well-healed result in 7-10 days.
HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE REQUIRED?
One session is all that is required, but additional visit may be necessary to complete areola tattooing process. Even if scars are not visible, the breast tissue has been compromised, and we consider the entire area to be scarred. Tattooing over scars is unpredictable. Your technician will discuss this in detail with you during your visit.
HOW LONG WILL AN AREOLA TATTOO LAST?
While a tattoo is generally expected to last a lifetime, areola tattooing uses colors much lighter than standard tattooing. Some fading may occur over many years’ time, and at some point, you may elect to have your color refreshed.
Unfortunately, not everyone is a good candidate for semi-permanent makeup. It is not recommended for any clients who are or have:
Glaucoma and those who are taking blood thinning medicines (e.g. Aspirin)
Diabetic (please consult your doctor)
Viral Infections and/or Diseases
Pacemaker or major heart problems
Skin irritations or psoriasis/eczema near the treated area (rashes, sunburn, acne, etc.)
Those with allergies to makeup, colors or hair-dye
Those with easily triggered post inflammatory hyper pigmentation
Those with transmittable blood conditions like HIV or Hepatitis
Are a hemophiliac
Have healing disorders, on blood thinners, uncontrolled high blood pressure or had mitral valve disorder.
Those on any skin medication such as Roaccutane, steroids which thin and oversensitive the skin.
AHA's (lactic, glycolic, citric, retinoid a d tartaric acids) or any OTC creams and lotions for tone correcting, anti-aging, exfoliating - fading can discolor your semi-permanent makeup.
Chemotherapy and Cancer Treatments: Doctors clearance may be necessary.
Shingles (Varicella): If you have shingles on your face, please wait several months to get semi-permanent makeup.

(How to Prepare for Your Appointment)
If you have used Accutane within the last year, we will be unable to perform the procedure as it leads to increased swelling, bleeding, and pain. It will also impede your skin's healing process.
Must be free of skin irritations, such as sunburns, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and severe acne on the treatment area.
You must be off of antibiotics 2 weeks prior to your scheduled procedure.
Avoid blood thinners such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Aleve, Vitamin E, and Fish Oil at least 48-72 hours before procedure, unless it is medically necessary, in which case we will need a doctor's note.
Avoid alcohol or caffeine consumption the day before, and the day of, your scheduled procedure.
No sauna or tanning 1 week prior to the procedure.
No exercising the day of the procedure.
You must be at least 4 months post op with healed wounds.
(How to Care for the Treated Areas)
You may carefully remove the bandages when you get home.
With clean hands, wash the treated areas before bedtime with lukewarm water and unscented soap or cleanser. Apply a thin layer of the ointment provided to you by LoAnn's Brow Art Studio. Repeat this same process for at least 5 days, twice a day (morning and night).
After the 5 days, you may switch to an unscented lotion, such as Lubriderm or Cetaphil, and use it for another 2 weeks in place of the ointment.
Avoid wearing tight bras for the first 48 hours. Allow the treated area some room to breathe as much as possible during the healing process.
Do not use any scented lotions or tanning lotions for the first 2 weeks.
Do not scratch, pick or peel any scabs of flakes during the healing process.
For at least 5 days after the procedure, avoid:
Foreign bodily fluids on or around the areolas
Activities that will cause extreme sweating
Swimming pools, hot tubs or other bodies of water
Long hot showers and saunas
UV exposure (including tanning beds)
Massages and skin treatments
No laser light therapy, as it can darken/lighten or distort the pigment of the tattoo color.
No exfoliants, retinol acids, glycolic acids and alpha hydroxy acids on the area for 30 days after the appointment (causes premature fading).
Signs and symptoms of infection (please contact your physician at first sign of infection):
Feeling Waves of Heat and Cold
Swelling of the Tattooed Area
Pus Coming Out of the Tattooed Area
Red Lesions Around the Tattooed Area
Areas of Hard, Raised Tissue

Disclosure Statement/Notice for Filing Complaints
Public Act 375, which was enacted in December of 2010, indicates that individuals shall not tattoo, brand, or perform body piercing on another individual unless the tattooing, branding, or body piercing occurs at a body art facility licensed by the Michigan Department of Community Health. In addition, persons with certain conditions including, but not limited to, diabetes, hemophilia or epilepsy, are at higher risk for complications and should consult a physician before undergoing a body art procedure.
