Thank you so much for respecting our time, as we respect yours!
WHAT IS AREOLA TATTOOING?
Areola tattooing — also called 3D nipple tattooing or areola micropigmentation — is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that creates the realistic illusion of a three-dimensional areola and nipple using specialized tattooing techniques. Advanced micropigmentation methods are used to replicate natural color, depth, and shadow, producing results that are remarkably lifelike. The procedure is quick, nearly painless, and does not require any surgical recovery.
WHO IS THIS SERVICE FOR?
Areola Tattoo & Restoration is for anyone seeking to restore or improve the appearance of their areola, including:
-
Breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomy, with or without nipple reconstruction
-
Individuals who have had breast reduction, augmentation, or other breast surgeries that affected the areola
-
Anyone dissatisfied with the color, size, shape, or symmetry of their areola
-
Those who simply want to enhance their overall breast appearance and confidence
IS AREOLA TATTOOING SAFE?
Yes. Areola tattooing is as safe as any other professional tattooing process. We use only single-use, sterile, disposable needles and supplies — no exceptions. Because the pigments used closely match skin tones rather than bright colors, the risk of allergic reaction is extremely low. Choosing a trained, experienced artist who follows strict hygiene protocols keeps infection risk minimal.
DOES IT HURT?
We do everything we can to make this procedure as comfortable as possible. Depending on your specific surgery history, you may experience little to no sensation at all, or mild discomfort. Most clients report minimal or no pain during the procedure.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?
The full appointment — including numbing, layout, and pigment color selection — typically takes up to 2 hours for both bilateral (both sides) and unilateral (one side) procedures.
HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE NEEDED?
Most clients achieve their desired result in one session. However, additional visits may be necessary in some cases. Breast tissue that has been through surgery is considered compromised — tattooing over scar tissue is unpredictable, and pigment retention can vary. Your artist will discuss this in detail during your appointment.
If you have had nipple reconstruction, please note that pigment may not take as well on the reconstructed area. Follow-up visits may be needed to ensure adequate color retention.
HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO WAIT AFTER SURGERY?
You must be at least 4 months post-op from your final surgery and/or nipple reconstruction, with fully healed wounds, before we can proceed with areola tattooing. Please do not book before reaching this milestone.
HOW LONG WILL RESULTS LAST?
While areola tattoo pigments are longer-lasting than standard PMU services, some fading may occur over time since the colors used are much lighter than traditional body tattoo ink. Most clients enjoy results for many years before electing to have a color refresh.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Wear a top that is easy to take on and off. During the procedure, we will remove only your top and drape you with a paper vest for privacy and comfort. At the end of the service, the tattooed area is covered with a medical pad or clear bandage (unless you have a tape or adhesive allergy). Wearing a bra is optional.
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MRIs?
In rare cases, some people may experience mild swelling or a brief burning sensation around a tattoo area during an MRI. This is uncommon and temporary. Please inform your healthcare provider that you have a 3D nipple tattoo before any MRI is ordered.

Pre-Care Instructions
(How to Prepare for Your Areola Tattoo Appointment)
Please follow these guidelines carefully before your appointment:
-
Accutane: If you have used Accutane within the past year, we are unable to perform the procedure — it increases swelling, bleeding, and pain, and impedes the skin's healing process.
-
Skin condition: Your treatment area must be free of skin irritations — no sunburn, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, or severe acne in the area.
-
Antibiotics: You must be off antibiotics for at least 2 weeks before your procedure.
-
Blood thinners: Avoid Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Aleve, Vitamin E, and Fish Oil for at least 48–72 hours before your procedure, unless medically necessary. If medically required, a doctor's note is needed.
-
No sauna or tanning for 1 week before your appointment.
-
No exercise on the day of your procedure.
-
Post-op timing: You must be at least 4 months post-op with fully healed wounds before your appointment.
For your safety, if you are currently pregnant, we cannot perform the procedure and will ask you to reschedule.
Post-Care Instructions
(How to Care for the Treated Area After the Procedure)
-
Carefully remove the bandages when you arrive home.
-
With clean hands, wash the treated area before bedtime with lukewarm water and an unscented soap or cleanser. Apply a thin layer of the ointment provided by LoAnn's Brow Art Studio. Repeat twice daily (morning and night) for at least 5 days.
-
After 5 days, switch to an unscented lotion (Lubriderm or Cetaphil) and use for an additional 2 weeks in place of the ointment.
-
Avoid tight bras for the first 48 hours — allow the treated area room to breathe.
-
Do not use scented lotions or tanning lotions for the first 2 weeks.
-
Do not scratch, pick, or peel any scabs or flakes during the healing process.
-
For at least 5 days after the procedure, avoid:
-
Foreign bodily fluids on or near the areolas
-
Activities that cause excessive sweating
-
Swimming pools, hot tubs, or other bodies of water
-
Long hot showers and saunas
-
UV exposure, including tanning beds
-
Massages and skin treatments on the area
-
Laser light therapy — this can darken, lighten, or distort tattoo pigment
-
Long-term care:
-
No exfoliants, retinol, glycolic acids, or alpha hydroxy acids on the area for 30 days after the procedure (causes premature fading)
-
Apply SPF daily once fully healed to maintain color longevity
-
Signs of infection — contact your doctor immediately if you experience: Fever, abnormal swelling, pus, red lesions, hard raised tissue, or feeling of heat and cold waves.
HEALING PROCESS
What to Expect During the Healing Process
-
Days 1–2: The treated area may feel slightly tender. Keep covered with the bandage or medical pad provided.
-
Days 3–7: Slight scabbing or skin flaking is normal — do NOT pick. This is a natural part of the healing process.
-
Days 7–10: ✅ Initial healing is complete for most clients.
-
Week 4–6: Full healing is complete and true color is revealed. Results of additional sessions (if needed) should be assessed at this point.
Note: Tattooing over scarred breast tissue heals differently than other areas. Your artist will advise on expected healing based on your specific case.
